UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium
The UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium (MECA) serves as the education unit of the Marine Extension Service as well as a Public Service and Outreach unit of the University of Georgia. MECA’s mission is to develop understanding of and foster respect for coastal environmental in Georgia. The facility is located on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Georgia.
A variety of marine science and coastal ecology education programs are offered year round by the Center to diverse audiences including pre K-grade 12, undergraduate and graduate students, interns, elderhostelers, adult students, in-service teachers, and the general public. Onsite and outreach school programs and community programs fill the academic year. Teacher workshops, graduate courses, and marine science camps are offered during summer. The Center’s indoor teaching facilities include classrooms, wet labs, touch tanks, a 10,000 gallon public aquarium, and distance learning classrooms.
Field experiences are made possible by a series of natural trails, docks, and study sites on campus. A small fleet of boats, including the 43 foot trawler R/V Sea Dawg provides opportunities for study of estuaries and wild barrier islands nearby. An 80-bed dormitory and full-service cafeteria allow visiting groups to stay in residence.
